Impact Study: Estimating the Bafokeng Diaspora
Project Status:
Completed
Project Number: 1644
Project Scope:

Currently there is no data on Bafokeng people who live outside Bafokeng land.

To conduct an Impact Study to know the approximate size, spread or composition of this ‘diaspora’ (A scattered population with a common origin in a smaller geographic area), and the nature of its connections with the Bafokeng ‘home’ area.

The methods used will include:

- to calculate estimates of the potential diaspora based on existing quantitative datasets, including the 2001 and 2011 census, the RBA’s own 2011 PULA census and household survey and the RBA’s 2014 Ntshegetse census. Some of these datasets already include indicators relating to mobility and remittances.

- to conduct a face-to-face survey of a representative sample of Bafokeng households living on Lefatshe le Bafokeng to establish what percentage of their family connections currently live in the Diaspora, and their basic characteristics.

- To conduct a telephone survey of a selection of Bafokeng in the Diaspora, identified through the previous survey step,

- write up the report and present the findings.

A contractor will be hired and should commence on the October 2014 – January 2015.

In scope:

  • Estimate the number of Bafokeng residing outside RBN land (Lefatshe la Bafokeng);
  • Identify the geographical spread and areas of concentration of the diaspora;
  • Profile the basic demographic composition of the diaspora, particularly in terms of educational and employment profile;
  • Document dominant mobility patterns (permanent outmigration, temporary outmigration to study or work, circular mobility, etc); and
  • Document dominant forms of engagement between the diaspora and Lefatshe-based people and structures (remittances to family members; participation in decision-making at family, Kutle, Kgotla or RBN level traditional structures; investment in local businesses, etc.) and to understand perceptions relating to outward mobility and the relationship between ‘stayers’ and the diaspora, including diaspora identification with Bafokeng identity and traditional structures.
