To document the impact which the five-month strike at Lonmin, Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) and Impala Platinum mines had on the neighbouring community. This strike in the North West province’s platinum belt, the longest strike in South African history, has mainly been understood as a dispute between employers and labourers, with the South African government in a mediating and monitoring role. The impacts on near-mining communities in the Platinum Belt have been less discussed. This report will provide a sense of the depth and breadth of impacts on the community. The Royal Bafokeng Protective services, Royal Bafokeng Enterprise development, Health and Social development together with the Research department will provide the necessary information and statistics available to compile this report. The final report will be disseminated to various key Stakeholders such as the Mines, DMR and the RBN governance and departments.
